Edward C. Ryan, 99, of Waukon, IA, died Wednesday, September 7, 2011, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 10th, at 11:00 AM at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon, with Fr. Joseph Schneider and Rev. Msgr. Ed Lechtenberg officiating. Burial with military graveside rites will be held in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call from 4:00 to 7:00 PM on Friday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon where there will be a scripture service at 4:00 PM.
Edward Cornelius Ryan was born October 5, 1911 in Waukon, IA, the son of Edward J. and Ella Elizabeth (Regan) Ryan. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon. Edward attended Jefferson #8 country school in rural Allamakee County, graduated from Waukon High School in 1929 and attended Waukon Jr. College studying Chemistry. On August 1, 1942 he married Eleanor Clemence Larkin at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon. He worked at the Oliver Tractor Plant in Charles City, IA, before being drafted into the United States Army during WWII. Edward was a Sergeant with the 280th Combat Engineers Battalion from 1943 until 1945. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was stationed in the Rhine Valley and Central Europe. After the service Edward and Eleanor started farming in Jefferson Township where they raised beef and dairy cows, chickens, hogs and grain crops. They retired in 1981 when they moved to Waukon. Edward helped his son Jim in the plumbing business for a short time.
Edward was a lifetime member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, the American Legion and VFW. He enjoyed playing cards, listening to music, dancing, traveling with Eleanor on bus trips across the United States, working in his garden and woodcarving. Edward also enjoyed spending time with his family and following his children and grandchildren activities.
Survivors include his wife, Eleanor of Waukon; his children, Clement (Carolyn) Ryan of Swisher, Mary (Richard) Jensen of McGregor, John (Sherry) Ryan of Ankeny, Robert (Deborah) Ryan of Waterville, Donald Ryan of Independence, James (Linda) Ryan and Ann Ryan both of Waukon; 19 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and a sister, Alice Tayek of Waukon He is preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Constance Howes and a brother, Charles Ryan.
Casketbearers are Allen Ryan, Sean Ryan, Chris Ryan, Nic Ryan, Andy Ryan and Chad Stamper.
