Earl Robert Steffenson

Earl R. Steffenson, 74, of Waukon, IA, died unexpectedly on November 25, 2013 at his apartment in Poynette, WI. Memorial services will be held Saturday, November 30th, at 11:00 AM at Old West Paint Creek Lutheran Church in rural Waukon, with Pastor Ken Kimball officiating. Friends may call from 3:00 PM - 7:00 PM Friday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.
Earl Robert Steffenson was born on April 8, 1939 on the rural Waukon, IA farm of his parents, Nennor and Mildred (Aure) Steffenson. He was baptized and confirmed at Old West Paint Creek Lutheran Church where he remained a life-long member. Earl started his schooling at the rural Fan School, graduated from Waukon High School in 1957, and earned a BS degree in horticulture from Iowa State University in 1962. He spent the majority of his working career as a federal food inspector for the USDA. Although most of his time was spent in Wisconsin, he also worked in Florida, Nebraska, Minnesota, Iowa, and Texas, as well as several other states, before his retirement in 1998. In the early 1970s he bought a farm adjoining his parents' farm and enjoyed using his horticulture training by raising an apple orchard and growing grapes and berries. He was a good steward of the land and liked helping his neighbors by sharing his produce and helping to prune trees and vines.
Earl split his time between his farm in rural Waukon and an apartment in Poynette, WI. While there he was active in Christ Lutheran Church in DeForest, WI and sang in the choir. He was very generous and supportive of people and numerous charitable organizations. Earl enjoyed following sports and was an avid Chicago Cubs fan. He liked playing cards and formerly sang in the Little Switzerland of Iowa Harmonizers, a local barbershop group. Earl maintained an interest in all the activities of his nieces and nephews and loved attending family events.
Survivors include 2 sisters: Judy (Les) Thronson of Rochester, MN and Clara Ann (Neal) Lovstuen of Decorah, IA; 6 brothers: John of Rochester, MN, Bill (Joyce) and Gordon (Shirley), both of Waukon, IA, Glen (Karen) of Elizabeth, IL, and David (Gloria) and Neal (Karin), both of Owatonna, MN; a sister-in-law Carol Steffenson of Rochester, MN; 2 aunts: Helen Evanson and Lillian Larson, both of Waukon; and numerous nieces and nephews and their families. He is preceded in death by his parents and a nephew, Kyle Steffenson.
