Dorothy I. Olson, 86, of Waukon, IA, formerly of Harpers Ferry, IA, died Thursday, October 25, 2007 at Northgate Care Center in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Monday, October 29th at 1:30 pm at Old East Paint Creek Lutheran Church in rural Waterville, IA, with Pastor Ken Kimball officiating. Burial will be held in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 2:00 to 5:00 pm Sunday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.
Dorothy Irene Monserud Olson was born on November 14, 1920 in rural Waterville, the daughter of Walter H. and Dora (Olson) Monserud. She was baptized at East Paint Creek Synod Lutheran Church in rural Waterville and confirmed at Waterville Lutheran Church in Waterville. Dorothy graduated from Waterville High School. On December 8, 1943 she married Alton Morris Olson at Waterville Lutheran Church. They farmed in rural Harpers Ferry, where they raised beef and dairy cattle, hogs, chickens and grain. Dorothy was a member of Old East Paint Creek Lutheran Church, where she was active in its ladies aid and the Priscilla Circle.
Dorothy enjoyed cooking for church gatherings and holidays. Some of her favorite recipes were Norwegian which included rumagrot, lefse, rosettes and krum kaka. Dorothy would also listen to "open line" on the radio to write down recipes. Dorothy took several trips with her good friend Vergene Collins to the Ortman Clinic in Canistota, SD. She also enjoyed fishing, taking care of her cats and traveling to Cedar Rapids to visit Lorraine and her husband Joe.
Survivors include her children, Robert of Harpers Ferry and Lorraine and her husband Joe Trey of Cedar Rapids, IA; 2 brothers, Wilmer Monserud of Waterville, IA and Odin (Pauline) Monserud of Waukon; a sister-in-law, Amy Ferris of Burlington; a brother-in-law, Lloyd (Ruby) Olson of Harpers Ferry.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Alton who died in 2006; a brother, Norman H. Monserud; 4 sisters-in-law, Ethyl, Norma, Margaret Monserud and Dolores Olson; 3 brothers-in-law, Orville and Helmer Olson and Cy Ferris; and a special sister and friend, Irene Tollefsrud.
Casketbearers are Herb and Mark Dehli, Steve, Franklin, and Eric Weymiller, David Monserud, David Olson and Paul Ebner.
