Dorothy M. Whalen Deeny, 85, of Waukon, IA, died Wednesday, March 25, 2009, at her home in Waukon, with her 5 children and a granddaughter at her side. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 31st, at 11:00 AM at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon, with Fr. Joseph Schneider officiating. Burial will be held in St. Mary's Hanover Cemetery, rural Waukon. Friends may call from 4:00 - 8:00 PM Monday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon where there will be a 4:00 PM Scripture Service.
Dorothy Margaret Whalen Deeny was born June 24, 1923 on the rural Waukon, Hanover township farm of her parents, Maurice Francis and Estella (Dahlen) Gallagher. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary's Hanover Catholic Church and attended Hanover and Iowa River elementary schools and Immaculate Conception Catholic High School in Lansing, IA. She was married to Paul Gregory Whalen, and they were later divorced. Dorothy worked at Northern Engraving in Waukon for many years. She also did seamstress work for many years. On May 28, 1982 she married Donald Deeny at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon.
Dorothy was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church. She enjoyed sewing, dancing to the Toe Tappers, working in her flower garden with her sister Idella and spending time with her family and her good friend Irene Lewey.
Survivors include her children, Greg Whalen of Apple Valley, CA, Vicky (Richard) Stewart of Gastonia, NC, Suzie (Floyd) Mount, Jackie (Leonard) Bulman and Debi Peterson all of Waukon, IA; 20 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Idella (Bernard) Bresnahan of Waukon, Karen Sweet of Minneapolis, MN, 5 brothers, Vernon Gallagher and Robert (Connie) Gallagher both of Waukon, Fr. Maurice Gallagher of Boone, CO,
Joe (Inez) Gallagher of Dorchester, IA and Donald (Charlene) Gallagher of Bosier City, LA; and several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Donald who died in 1995 and a brother, Thomas Gallagher.
