Dorothy E. Buege, 85, of Waukon, IA, died Saturday, October 6, 2012, at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 10th, at 11:00 AM at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon, with Rev. Lynn G. Groe officiating. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call from 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM Tuesday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.
Dorothy E. Buege was born on November 28, 1926 on the Richland Center, WI, Bloomfield Township farm of her parents, Daniel E. and Leona (Rasmussen) West. She grew up living between her father's farms in Montana, Iowa, and Wisconsin and attended school in Alpha, IA, Richland Center, Viola, and West Lima WI, and Baker MT. She attended nurses training at Holy Rosary Hospital in Miles City, MT. While growing up Dorothy started a drum and bugle corps at the high school in Baker, MT and played percussion in a band with her family, The Bohemian Orchestra, in Yuba, WI. She also was a pilot and enjoyed flying, taking her training in canvas winged planes. For 3 months Dorothy served in the US Navy Reserve Recruits at the Naval Ammunition Depot in Hastings, NE as a nurse; she was discharged on V-J Day. While working as a nurse in Baker, MT she met Wilford "Bill" Buege and the two were married on March 30, 1946 at the Lutheran Church in Baker. They moved to Waukon, IA later that year and called Waukon home for the rest of their lives.
Dorothy had an active career life working as a nurse at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon from 1948-1961; as a bookkeeper at the local Philips 66 Service Station for 17 years; as a writer for Waukon Newspapers where she authored "Stocks by Dot", an article about local stock car racing, for 10 years; and as a receptionist/nurse for Dr. Rick Jacobi, DDS for 10 years.
She was an avid volunteer throughout the community. She was ladies circle president at St. John's Lutheran Church, past president of both the American Legion and VFW Auxiliaries, and an officer in the Veterans Memorials Hospital Auxiliary. She served as a Girl Scout leader for many years, led survival training for the local Boy Scouts, and was involved in the adopted grandmother program at the Waukon elementary schools. Dorothy enjoyed going to the ranch in Montana for 2 weeks every summer and also traveling other places. She loved working with kids and also spent a lot of time caring for and helping friends and family members. In her spare time she enjoyed gardening, canning, baking, and crocheting.
Survivors include her 3 children: Donna (Darwin) Winke of Elkader, IA, Daniel (Signe) Buege of Lansing, IA, and Thomas (Lisa) Buege of Waverly, IA; 8 grandchildren: Scott (Sara) and Brock (Jennifer) Winke, Derek (Darcey) and Darren Buege, Kari (Ryan) Smith, Debbie (James) Harris, and Bethany and Thad (Keevan) Buege; 11 great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law Daniel Salaz of Reno, NV; and a sister-in-law Doris West of Mission, TX. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband Bill, who died in 1998; a granddaughter Jennifer; a sister Wanda Salaz; and a brother Leslie West and 2 infant brothers.
