Donald "Don" Robert Sommermeyer

Don R. Sommermeyer, 75, of New Albin, IA, died Sunday, June 23, 2024, at Glen Oak Alzheimer's Special Care Center in Urbandale, IA. Friends may greet the family on Friday, June 28th, at from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at New Albin Community Center with a Masonic service to follow at 7:00 PM with Mike Root officiating. Martin – Grau Funeral Home in Waukon, IA, is handling the arrangements.

Donald Robert Sommermeyer was born April 26, 1949, in La Crosse, WI, the son of Milton and Gertrude (Bechtel) Sommermeyer. Don was baptized and confirmed at St. Peters United Church of Christ in New Albin, IA, graduated from Kee High in 1967, in Lansing, IA, and also attended University of Wisconsin in La Crosse, WI. On August 17, 1974, he married Susan Grahlman at Grace United Methodist Church in New Albin. Don worked at Interstate Power Company in Lansing and for the Local # 139 out of Madison, WI, as a heavy equipment operator before retiring in 2010.

He was a member of Great Lights Lodge # 181 in Decorah, IA, and Cedar Rapids Scottish Rite, where he was a 32nd degree. Don enjoyed reading about history, detailing cars, and target shooting.

Survivors include his two sons: Eric (Kimberly) Sommermeyer of Waverly, IA, and Jon (Kandee Tower) Sommermeyer of New Albin; two grandchildren: Lukas and Karsten Sommermeyer; a brother Gary Sommermeyer of Southbury, CT; sister-in-law Barb Grahlman of Postville, IA; niece Brandi Bachman; and a nephew Brian Grahlman. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Susan, who died in 2019; and a brother-in-law Bob Grahlman.

Honorary casketbearers are Lukas and Karsten Sommermeyer. Tim Felton, Mike Root, Adam, Keith, and Stan Schwartzhoff, Robert Somermeyer, Russ Fenske, and Steve Meiners.
