Delora Mae "Dodie" Palmer, 77, of Harpers Ferry, IA, died Monday, May 15, 2006 at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon, IA. Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 18th at 11:00 am at Waterville Lutheran Church in Waterville, IA, with Pastor Laura Gentry officiating. Burial will be in the IOOF Cemetery, Rossville, IA. Friends may call from 3:00 to 7:00 pm Wednesday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.
Delora Mae Williams Palmer was born on March 15, 1929 in Harpers Ferry, IA, the daughter of Bert and Florence (Boardman) Williams. She grew up in Harpers Ferry and graduated from high school there in 1946. On November 7, 1946 Dodie married Stanley LeRoy Palmer at the First Presbyterian Church in Waukon. They spent several years operating a short order cafe and farming in the Waterville area. In 1952 they moved to Dubuque where Dodie took a job as a waitress and did childcare. She loved children and became involved in education at Kennedy Elementary School in Dubuque where she worked as a teaching associate and in the media center for more than 20 years. After retiring in 1991, they moved back to Harpers Ferry in 1993.
While she lived in Dubuque, Dodie was a member of Lord of Life Lutheran Church . She enjoyed crocheting and embroidery in her free time. She also was an excellent baker and cook. A very social person, she loved spending time with her friends whether that was playing cards, dancing, bowling, shopping or just enjoying their company. Throughout her life she was known for her caring manor, from the way she tended to children to how she later helped neighbors and friends. Her grandchildren were always a special joy to her.
Survivors include her husband Stanley of Harpers Ferry; a daughter, Jeanene (Fred) Delphey of Waukon; and 2 grandchildren, Adam (Erika) Delphey of Decorah and Brianna Delphey of Ames. She is preceded in death by her parents; 2 sisters, Irma ConCannon and Effie Corrigan; and 3 brothers, Jim, Richard and Carl Williams.
Casketbearers are Kenneth, David, Bob and Stephen Palmer, Gary Johnson and Kevin Mathis.
