David Bie

August 11, 1926 — June 30, 2023

David Oliver Nathaniel Bie was born August 11, 1926, at home in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the son of Ole and Nilsine Bie. He was baptized and confirmed at Bethany Lutheran Church (Minneapolis) and described himself a God-fearing Christian.

Dave grew up in the Minneapolis neighborhood where he was born, a "Southside boy". He attended Roosevelt High School, playing football and track, winning multiple letters for his track performance. Dave was one credit shy of graduating high school in 1944, when he enlisted and served in the 6th Air Force in Central America and the Galapagos Islands. After WWII ended, Dave's high school diploma was conferred but he never picked it up! He attended the University of Minnesota and the Minnesota School of Business on the 'GI Bill'.

In August of 1952, Dave married Phyllis "Boots" Booton with whom he had three daughters. He loved his family and was very, very proud of his daughters. He worked for 28 years as a city bus driver for the Metropolitan Transit Commission. Shortly after the family moved to Edina in 1968, Phyllis became ill and passed away in August of 1971. Dave married Ella Huber in September of 1973. After he retired, they traveled extensively: a cruise to Alaska, a visit to Norway-his parents' country of origin, Egypt, and the Holy Land. He also traveled with his nephew Willy to Mexico and to Florida to visit nephew Bob Kramer and his wife Dar. Dave and Willy traveled to England with his daughter Elisabeth and her husband Vince. Ella passed away after a long illness in 2004.

Never without a good woman in his life, Dave befriended Wilhamine Huber. "Willie" became a dear friend until her death in 2013.

At the urging of his daughters, Dave moved to Waukon, Iowa, in May of 2021 to be closer to two daughters.

A WWII veteran, Dave will be buried at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery (Minneapolis) with honors in a private ceremony at a later date.

Survivors include his daughters: Andrea Bie (Brian) Carstens of Waterville, IA, JoAnne Bie-Veit of Decorah, IA, and Elisabeth (Vince) Underwood of Northfield, MN; five grandchildren: Paul Winchell, Andy (Liz) Winchell, Mike Veit, Steve Carstens, and Nick (Raelen) Carstens; four great-grandchildren: Owen and Jamie Winchell and Ben and Ted Winchell; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, by his wife Phyllis, by his second wife Ella, and by his friend Wilhamine. He was also preceded in death by two brothers: Wally (Viv) Bie and Ralph (Edna) Bie; three sisters: Marg (Frank) Scott, Al (John) Botko, and Bergie (Ernie) Kramer; nephew Willy (Bev) Botko, and niece Carole (Phil) Sonnenberg.

A gathering of family and friends will be held on Thursday, July 13th, at 11:00 AM at Morris Nilsen Funeral Chapel, Richfield MN. A light luncheon will be served.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to: Winneshiek Medical Center Hospice (Decorah, IA) and/or Good Samaritan Society (Waukon, IA).
