Darlene Zelda Ewing was born November 26, 1930, to Frederick and Geneva (Cahoon) Schlitter. As the story goes, when Darlene was born she was so small that she fit into her father's boot box and that's where her nickname Boots came from.
On May 28, 1949, Boots married her childhood sweetheart Stan Ewing on her parents' farm. From 1951 to 1970, Stan and Boots farmed south of Rossville where they raised their two daughters, Sharon and Sue. Boots worked as a school cook for the Waukon Public School District where she enjoyed the company of her fellow cooks and the students who passed through her line.
Boots was a member of the Rossville Presbyterian Church and the Rossville Presbyterian Women. Her family will remember Boots for her cooking, crocheting and her love for her husband, Stan. The couple spent many weekends listening and dancing to area music groups, taking drives around the countryside or camping at Goose Island.
