Daniel Charles Burke was born on July 1, 1940, to parents Charles and Ruth (Hammel) Burke. He was a life long resident of Lansing and graduated from the last class of Immaculate Conception High School in 1958. After high school, Dan attended La Crosse Vocational School for printing; his first job was at La Crosse Printing Company. He later worked for Waukon Newspapers and the Allamakee County Journal. Dan was a loyal mass server at the nearby Catholic Church, often filling in on notice from nuns when another server did not show up. During high school he worked for Glenn Connor delivering groceries in the IGA van to people calling in orders. He was an avid Milwaukee Braves fan and enjoyed traveling with his brother Bill and parents for several years to Milwaukee County Stadium. In later years he became a Green Bay Packers fan. Dan loved his Irish heritage and always celebrated St. Patrick’s Day.
