Curtis "Curtie" G. Schoenthal, 98, of Waukon, IA, died Saturday, October 4, 2025, at the Good Samaritan Society in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Friday, October 10th, at Martin - Grau Funeral Home with Deacon Patrick Malanaphy officiating and burial at in Oakland Cemetery, both in Waukon. Friends may greet the family from 10:00 AM until time of services on Friday at the funeral home.
Curtis George Schoenthal was born on October 25, 1926, in Jefferson Township in rural Waukon, IA, the son of Edward and Caroline (Wacker) Schoenthal. He was baptized and confirmed at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon. Curtis started school at the age of four to have enough students to keep Jefferson #1 open. He graduated from Waukon High School at the age of 16 in 1943. His father rented a room in Waukon so Curtis and his sister Dorothy could go to high school. On May 28, 1948, he married Luella Marie Schlitter at the Zion United Church of Christ parsonage in Waukon.
Curtis farmed with his father and uncle until his father died; he then took the farm over and sold it in 1969, before moving into Waukon. Curtis drove ambulance, school bus, and worked in maintenance at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon before becoming the maintenance supervisor. Curtis had a green thumb and had planted a garden this past spring. He loved animals, fishing, and camping.
Survivors include his children: Cheryl (Glen) Grady of Neillsville, WI, Jerry (Carol) Schoenthal of Waukon, Kaye (Jeff) Engelhardt of Charles City, IA, and Todd (Kim Rathbone) Schoenthal of Waukon; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Marie in 2009; a sister Dorothy (Leo) Klocke; an infant sister; and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
Casketbearers are Brandon, Blaine, Bryce, and Brett Grady, Mitch and Kirk Engelhardt, and Edward and John Schoenthal. Honorary casketbearers are Edie Schwarz, Jennifer Gravel, and Julia Schoenthal.
