Colleen Kaye Bakewell was born October 12, 1948, in Winona, MN, the daughter of Glen W. and Mary Ellen (Durnen) Goetting. She graduated from Winona Senior High in 1966. On October 21, 1972, Colleen married Robert "Bob" Bakewell. The couple resided in Barre Mills, WI, and on weekends they helped with the Bakewell farm in Waukon, IA. Colleen worked at Lakeview for many years in West Salem, WI and later also worked at the Gundersen Clinic in Onalaska, WI, in behavioral medicine department. Colleen and Bob spent 39 years together before Bob passed away in July 2011 from cancer. Colleen had early onset Alzheimer's for many years and, one month before he passed away and with a heavy heart, Bob had to place her at the Lighthouse in La Crosse so she would be taken care of and be closer to immediate family.
She loved spending time with family and her extended family, the Bakewells. Colleen loved being outdoors, flowers, and animals; her dog Maggie followed her everywhere and was a comforting companion. She liked going shopping with her mother, golfing, and watching car races. Colleen also enjoyed knitting and crocheting, cooking, and playing the organ. She was a people person with a heart of gold and always there for everyone. She lit up the whole room with her big smile and could strike up a conversation with anyone. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
Colleen's family wants to thank the staff at the Lighthouse, Unit 200, at Bethany Riverside for their kind and compassionate care.
