April 28, 1923 — April 26, 2006

Chester Thiele, 82, of Waukon, IA, died Wednesday, April 26, 2006 at Gunderson Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse, WI. Funeral services will be held Monday, May 1st at 11:00 am at First Presbyterian Church in Waukon, with Rev. Larry Olson officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call from 3:00 to 7:00 pm Sunday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.

Chester George Thiele was born on April 28, 1923, the son of Edward and Pearl E. (Weber) Thiele, on their rural Eitzen, MN farm. He was baptized at St. Luke's United Church of Christ in Eitzen. The family moved to Waukon when he was four and he was confirmed at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon. Chester graduated from Waukon High School in 1941 and then attended Waukon Jr. College and Iowa State University in Ames. He returned to work with his father at Thiele Implement and to help on the farm. On September 3, 1948 he married Ellen Lorine Warner at the First Congregational Church in Cresco, IA. Chester continued to farm for several years before beginning a long career in car sales. He worked at a number of dealerships in the area, including Elmer Johnson Pontiac, Mark Mauss Chevrolet, Quandahl Martin Ford, Dahly Chevrolet and Pladsen Motors. In 1980 he changed careers and joined Keystone Real Estate as a broker. Later, in 1983, he opened Thiele Real Estate with his two sons, Gregory and Ronald. He continued in the real estate business until 2000 when health conditions forced his retirement.

Chester was an active member of First Presbyterian Church in Waukon where he taught Sunday School, sang in the choir and served two terms as an Elder. He was a former member of the Jr. Chamber Commerce, SCORE and a long-time member of Kiwanis. He loved music and was a charter member and past president of The Switzerland of Iowa Harmonizers, SPEBSQSA, and a quartet known as the "Four Eyed Four." He enjoyed fishing at the Mississippi River as well as local trout streams, but was particularly fond of going on an annual family fishing vacation to Green Lake near Spicer, MN. Weekends often involved woodworking and fix-up projects around the house with the boys or caring for the lawn and shrubs, but Sundays always included family outings after church. His love of music carried over to dancing and after the children left home, he and Ellen spent many Sunday afternoons at Matter's Ballroom in Decorah.

Survivors include his wife Ellen and three children, Ellen Lee, Gregory (Jerre Henthorn) and Ronald, all of Waukon; 2 granddaughters, Stephanie and Samantha; and a sister, Ruth Bale of Brooklyn Park, MN. He is preceded in death by his parents; a brother Delmar; and 2 sisters, Ruby Ryan and Marion Boyum.

Honorary casketbearers are Vince Haas, Mark Mauss, Francis Martin, Roger Pladsen, John Leschensky, Clem Larkin and Keith Mason. Casketbearers are Phil Norton, Ken Krambeer, Greg Rasmussen, Jay Johnson, Dave Duncklee and Doug Miller.
