Charlotte Nuehring, 82, of Waukon, died Wednesday, March 12, 2014, at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. A time for visitation and opportunity to greet family will be held Saturday March 22nd from 12:00 to 2:00 PM at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon. Burial of ashes will be at a later date in Dorchester Methodist Cemetery.
Charlotte Ione Nuehring was born June 15, 1931, in Riceford, MN, the daughter of Clarence Melvin and Elma Thressa (Hocheit) Opsahl. She attended Riceford School and at an early age did household work for area families. She married Norris Shefelbine at the age of 17 and had a daughter, Nancy, before divorcing after 32 years.
While living in Cedar Rapids, IA, she worked as a nurse's aide in the newborn nursery at Mercy Hospital and later cared for several foster children in her home. After returning to Allamakee County, she operated a bar and grill in Waterville, IA, and then was a nurse's aide at the Allamakee County Care Facility.
She married Otto Nuehring in 1992. Because of her love for children, she again did child care for local families. Charlotte's favorite hobby was to play bingo. She also enjoyed feeding the neighborhood stray kittens, and collecting knick-knacks.
Survivors include her husband Otto Nuehring of Waukon; her daughter Nancy (Dale) Baines of Hills, IA; 2 granddaughters: Kerry O'Brine of Iowa City, IA, and Heidi Pyos of Colorado Springs, Co; 4 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild; a brother Harold; and sisters: Dorothy and Shirley.
She is preceded in death by her parents and siblings: Clifford, Norman, Robert, Ruby, and Carol.
