Charles J. Bulman, 89, of Waukon, IA, died Sunday, December 29, 2013, at his home in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Friday, January 3rd, at 11:00 AM at First Presbyterian Church in Waukon, with Pastor Grant VanderVelden officiating. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call from 3:00 PM - 7:00 PM Thursday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.
Charles James Bulman was born February 17, 1924, at home in Waukon, IA, the son of Leonard James and Martha Jane (Barthell) Bulman. He was baptized and confirmed at First Presbyterian Church in Waukon and graduated from Waukon High School. On July 18, 1944, he married Arla Olava Ebner at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon. Charles farmed until 1952, and he and Arla moved into town; Charles then worked as a Waukon city police officer. He then worked at Feuerhelm Mfg. as a carpenter building truck boxes, and later bought the business. Charles retired at the age of 81 from Reel-Core Inc. in Waukon.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Waukon. He and Arla liked to play cards with friends and also enjoyed traveling across North America in their motorhome. Charles loved taking fishing trips to Canada with family. Since he was a carpenter, Charles made furniture for both his own home and for his children. He was a good cook and used his wood stove to bake bread and cookies; Charles also loved gardening and canning.
Charles is survived by his six children: James (Jean), Leonard (Jackie), Linda (Gayle) Brink, all of Waukon, Kevin (Kim) of Daleville, AL, Kenneth (Lesa) of Richmond Hill, GA, and David of Waukon; 22 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters: Charlotte Reeder of Waukon and Edith Feuerhelm of Postville, IA.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Arla in 1997; two infant grandsons: Kevin, Jr. and Travis Bulman; and two great-grandchildren.
Casketbearers are Jeff, Jason, and Jeremy Brink, and Lenny, Bob, Travis, Josh, Nathaniel, and Zach Bulman.
