Carroll Ray Beall was born December 12, 1943, in St. Paul, MN, the son of Ray E. Beall and Opal Cecelia (Southwell) Hertrampf Beall. When Carroll was a small child, his family moved to the rural Waukon/Dorchester, IA area. Right after graduating from Waukon High School in 1962, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving in the 2 nd Battalion, 44 th Artillery until honorably discharged in 1965. He worked with missiles and was stationed in Oklahoma and New Mexico, but was deployed for a while to Florida during the Cuban Missile Crisis. On December 23, 1965, Carroll married Janice Britt at St. Paul's Methodist Church in Waukon. They moved to Waukesha, WI, where he got a job at HUSCO International manufacturing automotive hydraulic components. In 1978, Carroll got a job as a machinist for Boeing and he and his family moved to Washington state, retiring after 26 years. Janice and he divorced in 1989. Carroll moved back to Wisconsin and 10 years ago, moved home to Waukon.

He was a member of the NRA and did some hunting in his younger years. An avid fisherman, he fished as often as he could; a few years ago he broke his leg and after that healed, Carroll would MacGyver his way to the water with his cane and a shopping cart. Carroll wasn't afraid of going on adventures, often with his brother Billy, whether that was going camping in the Washington mountains with a pack horse or trying a canoeing escapade down the Mississippi. He was a thrifty shopper and enjoyed going to garage sales and collecting all sorts of birdhouses. He loved spending time with his grandkids and was excited about the new great-grandbaby that's on the way. Carroll was a colorful guy with a dry sense of humor, as evident when he was putting on a show on the dance floor or dressing himself and the dog up as the Grinch and Max, complete with a toboggan filled with trash bags.

Carroll is survived by his children: Brenda (Michael) Beall Winkles of Talladega, AL, and Stuart (Lori) Beall of Prairie du Chien, WI; grandchildren: Michael, Amanda, Chavon, Anthony, Dayton, Angelina, and Ricky; great-grandson Alexander and one great-grandchild on the way; four sisters: Irene (James) Elton of Stewartville, MN, Delia Beall of Waukon, Jette Berken of the Twin Cities, MN, and Emma Draper of Dorchester, IA; brother-in-law William Benson of Vinton, IA; many nieces and nephews; and his lifelong best friend Arlen Ashbacher of Ferryville, WI.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother William Hertrampf; and two sisters: Evangeline "Susie" Spores and Lois Benson.

Casketbearers are Mark and Nick Berken, Anthony Beall, Ricky Hostrawer, Eric and Blake Benson, and Blane Blackburn.
