Carol M. Smith, 64, of Dorchester, IA, died Thursday, October 24, 2013, at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse, WI. Funeral services will be held Monday, October 28th, at 11:00 AM at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon, IA, with Fr. Jim Dubert officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call from 3:00 PM - 6:00 PM Sunday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, where there will be a 2:45 scripture service.
Carol Marie Smith was born July 23, 1949, in Waukon, IA, the daughter of Leroy and Margaret (Schutz) Colsch. She attended Jefferson #4 country school, followed by St. Patrick Catholic School and Waukon High School. In 1966, Carol married Larry Smith at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Dorchester, IA. The couple lived in various places around Allamakee County before settling near the Iowa/Minnesota state line around Dorchester. Carol spent her career at Northern Engraving in Spring Grove, MN.
Carol loved to play bingo and never played without her lucky elephants on hand. She collected unique items, and liked gardening and going to auctions with Larry. She thoroughly enjoyed traveling with her sisters; a trip to Graceland was very memorable as Carol loved Elvis. Carol valued time with her family; she was always on the lookout for treasures to give the grandchildren.
Carol is survived by her husband Larry of Dorchester; three children: Mary (Lynn) Thomas of Preston, MN, Melissa (Joseph) Driscoll of Brownsville, MN, and Brian (Michelle) Connor of La Crosse, WI; nine grandchildren: Julia Smith, Jamie, Joshua, Jacob, and Jaclyn Thomas, Clarissa Driscoll, Samantha Smith-Hatter, and Tyler and Arwen Johnson; three step-grandchildren: Ellen, Brad, and Greg Johnson; great-grandchild Rebecca Witt; seven brothers: Charlie (Debbie) Colsch of Monona, IA, Lyle Colsch of Dorchester, Dan Colsch of Holmen, WI, Paul Colsch of Marquette, IA, John (Jeane) Colsch of Hokah, MN, Jim Colsch of Black Hammer, MN, and Don Colsch of Harmony, MN; five sisters: Karen Thomas of Harrisburg, NC, Anita (Steve) Von Arx of St. Charles, MN, Chris (Arman) Kindschy of Rochester, MN, Madonna Baker (Kevin Kuderer) of Tomah, WI, and Theresa Colsch of Waukon; two sisters-in-law: Margaret Jones of Castalia, IA, and Gail Colsch of Texas; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; son Edward; three brothers: Kenneth, David, and Gerald Colsch; and brother-in-law David Baker.
Honorary casketbearers are Clarissa Driscoll, Julia Smith, and Jamie, Josh, and Jacob Thomas. Casketbearers are Preston Baker, Jeremy Heire, Matt and Mike Colsch, and Bill and Jake Colsch.
