Carol J. Hanson, 87, of Waukon, IA, died Monday, May 18, 2009, at Northgate Care Center in Waukon, IA. Funeral services will be held Friday, May 22nd, at 11:00 AM at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon, with Rev. Lynn G. Groe officiating. Burial will be held in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call one hour before services on Friday at the Church. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon is assisting the family with arrangements.
Carol Jeanette Hanson was born on May 24, 1921 in Waukon, IA, the daughter of Carl J. and Josephine (Hanson) Hanson. She attended Hanson rural country school and graduated from Waukon High School in 1940 with a Normal Training Certificate and attended summer courses at Luther College in Decorah. In 1962 Carol moved into Waukon from the Makee Township farm where she lived for 40 years. She was an elementary school teacher for 42 years with her last 20 years of teaching in Dorchester, IA, before retiring in 1983. Carol was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church where she was active in WELCA. She was also a member of the Women's Civic Club and the local retired teachers group. Carol enjoyed spending time with family and friends, gardening and trying new food recipes.
Survivors include a brother, Alvin (Lyla) Hanson of Waukon, IA; nieces and nephews, Denise (Brian) Wullner of Waukon, Janet (Jeff) Mezera of Prairie du Chien, WI, Jeff (Erica) Hanson of Waukon and Deb (John) Pladsen of Chanhassen, MN; great nieces and nephews, Justin and Jordan Mezera, Sarah Wullner, Joey, Ethan and Emily Hanson, Katie and Will Pladsen and 2 step-great nephews, Donny Nykannen and Kevin Belle. She is preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Anna Hanson and a great-niece, Jamie Mezera.
