Carlton Selmer Jacobson

Carlton S. Jacobson, 97, of Garnett Place, 208 35th St. Drive SE, Cedar Rapids, IA, formerly of Waterville and Waukon, IA, died Friday, March 16, 2007 at Manor Care Health Services in Cedar Rapids. Funeral services will be held Monday, March 19th at 11:00 am at East Paint Creek Synod Lutheran Church in rural Waterville with Rev. Lynn G. Groe officiating. Burial with military graveside rites will be held in St. Pius at Cherry Mound Cemetery, rural Harpers Ferry, IA. Friends may call from 3:00 to 6:00 pm Sunday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.
Carlton Selmer Jacobson was born on September 10, 1909 on the rural Waterville, IA, farm of his parents, Martin T. and Emma (Satrang) Jacobson. He attended "Dahl" rural elementary school, graduated from Waterville High School in 1926 and attended Iowa State University in Ames where he studied engineering. After college he lived in Chicago for two years and then Lexington, KY for a year, where he worked for Armour Packing. From 1940 until 1945 Carlton served in the Army Air Force. He attained the rank of Technical Sergeant and saw duty in India and Burma while being awarded 2 Bronze Stars. On August 31, 1948 he married Loretta McGeough at St. Pius Catholic Church at Cherry Mound in rural Harpers Ferry. Carlton and his brother Oscar owned and operated Jacobson Brothers Garage in Waterville for many years until selling the business in 1976. After that he worked at B&G and Car Quest Auto Parts in Waukon and at HPR Sales & Repair in Harpers Ferry. Carlton moved from Waterville to Waukon in 1991 and since 2000 has been living in Cedar Rapids.
Carlton was a member of East Paint Creek Synod Lutheran Church, and the American Legion and VFW posts in Harpers Ferry. He also served many years on the Waterville City Council and was a long time member of the Waterville Volunteer Fire Department. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He read a lot about the American west, ancient history, and was particularly interested in WWII history. He also enjoyed traveling in the western United States and was happy to get the chance to see the pyramids and sphinx in Egypt and the Taj Mahal in India while he was in the service.
Survivors include his children, Mark Jacobson of Waterloo, IA, and Maurice Jacobson and Mary McDonell, both of Cedar Rapids; and 2 grandchildren, Seth and Molly McDonell. He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Loretta who died in 1984; 3 brothers, Theodore, Oscar and Albert Jacobson; and 4 sisters, Luella Busness, Bertha Barrett, Edna Allison and Ruth Sorenson.
Casketbearers are Mark and Maurice Jacobson, Seth McDonell, Don Cunningham, Herb Platten and Pete Grady.
