Boyd Jeglum

Boyd G. Jeglum, 76, of Waterville, IA, died Monday, January 7, 2019, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon, IA. Funeral services will be held Friday, January 11th, at 11:00 AM at Old East Paint Creek Lutheran Church in rural Waterville with Pastor Ken Kimball officiating. Burial with military honors will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 3:00 PM - 7:00 PM Thursday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.

Boyd Gilbert Jeglum was born May 27, 1942, the son of James R. and Emeline M. (Rema) Jeglum at the Hull House in Waukon, IA. He lived in a multi-generational home until his beloved grandpa Gilbert died in 1963. Boyd was a member of the last class to graduate from the Waterville High School in 1960; he attended a winter quarter at Iowa State University for dairy management. He was active in 4-H, both as a member and later as a leader of the Elon PMC group. Boyd was a part of a team that did a cleaning demonstration of a milking machine at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines, IA. He farmed with his parents on the family farm for his entire life except for a brief time when he served in the U.S. Army National Guard.

Boyd married Carol Louise Wurtzel on October 21, 1972, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon. He was a lifelong member of Old East Paint Creek Lutheran Church in rural Waterville, where he attended Sunday school, participated in Luther League, served as a trustee and president, and was active in the choir. Boyd spoke often about the Luther League ice cream socials on how much fun and work they were. He was also a member of the Little Switzerland Barbershop, Farm Bureau, and Waterville Fire Department, was one of the first dairy producers to participate in the Dairy Herd Improvement Association, and served as a Paint Creek Township trustee. Boyd had a collection of Farmall tractors that you would see in several of the local parades.

Boyd and Carol operated the farm focusing on dairy and crops. Land stewardship was an important part of their farm plan. He received conservation awards and was named Outstanding Young Dairy Farmer. Boyd was proud of the interest his children displayed in farming and looked forward to passing the operation of the Jeglum Homestead to them. Boyd maintained an active interest in the farm until his death. In fact, Boyd and his faithful dog Charlie often could be seen driving around the neighborhood and keeping an eye on everything.

Survivors include his wife of 46 years Carol of Waterville; his children: Thea (Eric) McKee of Waukon and Brian (Amy) Jeglum of Waterville; two granddaughters: Haylee and Hannah Jeglum; his aunt Ione Rema of Waukon; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; and his beloved dog Charlie. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Honorary casketbearers are Boyd's granddaughters Haylee and Hannah Jeglum. Casketbearers are Brian Jeglum, Eric McKee, Richard, Rodney, Randy, Russ, and James Rema, Gary Volz, and Tom Lind.
