Bernita R. Hanson, 85, of Waukon, IA, died Monday, October 19, 2009, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 22nd, at 11:00 AM at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon, with Rev. Lynn G. Groe officiating. Burial will be held in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call from 4:00 - 8:00 PM Wednesday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.
Bernita Ruth Hanson was born February 15, 1924 on the Ludlow Township, rural Waukon farm of her parents, Albert John and Esther Anna (Duvel) Kloke. She was baptized and confirmed at Bethlehem Presbyterian Church in rural Postville and attended Ludlow #7 rural school. Bernita did housekeeping for the Marion Nolting family and other familes in the Waukon area. On July 17, 1942 she married Emil Hanson at the Bethlehem Presbyterian Parsonage. Bernita and Emil farmed together for several years in Makee Township where they milked cows, raised chickens and sold eggs. She was a member of St. Johns Lutheran Church and was very active in its ladies groups and circles. Bernita enjoyed sewing, quilting, crocheting, embroidering work, fishing, babysitting for family, cooking, baking especially banana bread, cinnamon rolls and oatmeal cookies. Her most favorite times where spent with her family and friends.
Survivors include her children, Richard (Vera) Hanson, Elaine (Edward) Knuppe and James Hanson all of Waukon; 7 grandchildren, Nolan Hanson, Debbie (Terry) Johnson, Sheila (Bruce) Snitker, Vicky (Tim) Phipps, Carrie (Shane) Sievers, Tim (Sue) Meister and Jeffery (Amy) Meister; 9 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers, Leo (Dorothy) Klocke and Milo (Ruby) Kloke both of Waukon. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Emil who died in 1967; a sister, Mary Ann Miller and a brother, Robert Kloke.
