Berniece L. Hoffman, 89, of Waukon, IA, died Sunday, September 2, 2007 at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon, IA. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 5th at 11:00 am at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon, with Rev. Lynn Groe officiating. Burial will be held in Postville Cemetery, in Postville, IA. Friends may call from 4:00 to 7:00 pm on Tuesday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.
Berniece Loraine Thornton Hoffman was born on June 14, 1918 in rural Waukon, the daughter of Ross and Ora (Honn) Thornton. She was baptized at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Monona and confirmed at Community Presbyterian Church in Frankville, IA. Berniece attended Jefferson country school in rural Waukon. As a young girl she worked for a grocery store and as a housekeeper for area neighbors. On November 25, 1943 she married Eldo Hoffman at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Postville. After they were married they lived in Garnavillo, IA, for a short time before moving to a farm in rural Garnavillo. They farmed there until 1968, then moved back to Garnavillo. Berniece worked as a secretary for Dr. Davis' Veterinary Clinic until she retired in 1982.
Berniece was a former member of Zion Lutheran Church and was very active in its ladies circles, serving as a trustee and financial secretary in Clayton Center. She was also a former member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Monona and was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Berniece enjoyed baking, crocething, quilting, watching parades, working in her vegetable and flower garden, and visiting with family and friends.
Survivors include 3 sisters, Marjorie Heins of Dubuque, IA, Dora Jean (Bernard) Snitker of Waukon and Irene Entringer of Dubuque; and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Eldo; a brother, Clarence and a sister, Helen Harnack.
Casketbearers were Steven Kiesau, Ricky Davison, Ronald Gottschalk, Jerry Fennel, Rick Meisner and Dennis Munz.
