Bernice M. Duvel, 85, of Waukon, IA, died Sunday, May 24, 2009, at Northgate Care Center in Waukon, IA. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 27th, at 11:00 AM at Salem United Church of Christ in rural Waukon, IA, with Pastor Tom Buresh officiating. Burial will be at Salem Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call from 4:00 - 7:00 PM Tuesday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.
Bernice Miranda Duvel was born November 1, 1923 on the rural Paint Creek Township, rural Waterville, IA, farm of her parents, Otto and Mabel (Sando) Sanderson. She attended rural schools. On June 10, 1941 she married Milton Duvel at the Old East Paint Creek Lutheran Church parsonage in Waterville. Bernice and her husband farmed in Ludlow Township, west of Waukon, for many years, retiring in 1976. They moved to Waukon in 2000. Bernice was a member of the Salem United Church of Christ and its ladies groups as well as the American Legion Auxillary. She enjoyed fishing, quilting and spending time with her family.
Survivors include 3 children, Sandy (Paul) McConaughy of Cedar Rapids, IA, Linda Peterson of Waukon, IA and Virgil (Becky) Duvel of Toddville IA; a sister, Marie Winters of Waukon; 6 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, and four siblings, Mildred Webster, Stella Wiest, Ella Meier and Oswald Sanderson.
