Benjamin "Ben" H. Kruger, 88, of Waukon, IA, died Monday, January 14, 2013, at Northgate Care Center in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 19th, at 11:00 AM at Zalmona Presbyterian Church in rural Waukon, with Pastor Tom Buresh officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM Friday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.
Benjamin Henry Kruger was born on February 1, 1924 in rural Waukon, IA, the son of Henry and Emma (Helming) Kruger. He was baptized and confirmed at Zalmona Presbyterian Church where he remained a life-long member. Ben attended Bell country school in Union Prairie Township, graduated from Waukon High School and attended Waukon Jr. College. On October 3, 1946 he married Joan Marie Helming at the Zalmona Presbyterian Church. They farmed together in Ludlow and Union Prairie Township for many years, where they raised Brown Swiss Dairy Cows and did general farming. Ben had a great love for the land and enjoyed working it to the best of his knowledge. They retired from the farm and moved to Waukon in 2005.
Ben was a member of Zalmona Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder, a trustee and was a choir member. He served on the Ludlow Creamery board, Meadowland Dairy, Wisconsin Dairies, Federal Land Bank and was a member of National and State Brown Swiss Association. Ben loved music, he and Joan sang for weddings and funerals for many years and Ben enjoyed singing in a local barbershop group. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, dancing and working on jigsaw puzzles.
Survivors include his children: Wendy (Greg) Northcutt of Port Orchard, WA, Ken (Kristen) Kruger of DeWitt, IA, and Dave (Pam) Kruger of Waukon; 6 grandchildren: Kyle (Jamie) Halse, Kristen Halse, Nick, Brittany and Jennifer Kruger and Stephanie (Mitch) Lancaster; and 2 great-grandchildren: Keeran Barr and Kade Halse. He is preceded in death by his wife; Joan who died June 28, 2008; his parents; an infant son, and an infant daughter; and a brother: Willard.
Casketbearers are his grandchildren, Frank and Dan Sivesind, Roger Kruger, Clark Snitker and Paul Huffman.
