Benedict "Ben" J. Quillin, 92, of Waukon, IA, died Wednesday, February 27, 2013, at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Memorial services will be held Monday, March 11th, at 11:00 AM at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon, with Fr. Joseph Schneider and Msgr. Ed Lechtenberg officiating. Military honors will be held following the service at church. Burial will be at a later date at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call from 3:00 PM - 6:00 PM Sunday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, where there will be a 6:00 PM scripture service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Special Olympics, Iowa School for the Deaf in Council Bluffs, St. Patrick's School, or Good Samaritan Society of Waukon.
Benedict John Quillin was born February 2, 1921, at his parents' home in Harpers Ferry, IA, the son of John and Eline (Rykrogen) Quillin. He attended grade school in Harpers Ferry, graduated from Waukon High School, and attended Waukon Junior College. Ben served in the Army Air Force during WWII from 1943 - 1946 as a medic. After the service, he went to barber school, and went to work with his father in his barber shop in Harpers Ferry. On September 26, 1949, he married Marcella E. Kubitz in Lanesboro, MN. Ben worked for State Bond Mortgage and Investments as a salesman for 44 years before retiring in 1984.
Ben was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, where he was on the bingo board for 15 years. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, Waukon Booster Club, American Legion in Harpers Ferry, where he was a past commander, and was a member of the American Legion in Waukon. He served on the draft board for two years, was a former mayor of Harpers Ferry, and served on the Robey Library board. He was a big supporter of Special Olympics.
Ben enjoyed fishing, hunting, working crossword puzzles, reading books, attending local sporting events, and telling stories and jokes. He also enjoyed spending time on the Mississippi River especially on Sundays with his family on sandbars.
Survivors include his wife Marcella of Waukon; his children: Mike (Diane) of Waterville, IA, Pat (Carol) of Manitou Springs, CO, Kevin (Ann) of Waukon, Tim (Anne) of Boise, ID, Terry (Mara) of Phoenix, AZ, Sean of Miles, IA, and Molly (Kim) Quillin-Ramsey of The Villages, FL; 12 grandchildren: and 14 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents; and a sister Kathryn Quillin.
Honorary casketbearers are Ben's seven children.
