Barbara Ann Palmer - Bergeson

Barbara A. Palmer Bergeson, 85, of Waukon, IA, died Monday, April 2, 2012, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon, IA. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 4th, at 1:00 PM at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon with Rev. Lynn G. Groe officiating. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call from 4:00 PM - 8:00 PM Tuesday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.

Barbara Ann Bergeson was born on September 19, 1926 on the family farm near Quandahl in Waterloo Township, Allamakee County to Jacob P. and Thea (Selness) Quandahl. Barbara was baptized at Waterloo Ridge Lutheran Church and on September 19, 1938 confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon. Barbara attended local area country schools near Waterloo Ridge and graduated from Waukon High School in 1943. She later attended Nurses Training at Allen Hospital in Waterloo. On May 5, 1946 she married Lee H. Palmer in Waukon. They farmed near Clermont, IA until 1965 when they moved to Waukon, there they continued farming. Lee preceded her in death on May 6, 1977. On July 6, 1984 she married Howard O. Bergeson in Waukon. They lived in Everett, WA where Howard was employed, 3 years later after Howard retired they moved back to Waukon.

Barbara was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church where she was active in it's choir and women's circle, the American Legion Auxiliary and the Farm Bureau women's group. She enjoyed canning produce from her own garden, baking, reading Christian books and working puzzles. She always prepared three big hot meals each day and her grandchildren were a big part of her life.

Survivors include nine children, Bobbie (Steve) Cunningham of Harpers Ferry, Greg (Marlene) Palmer and Bruce (Janet) Palmer both of Waukon, Becky (Al) Bailey of Rowan, IA, Mark (Deb) Palmer of Waukon, Barbara Lee Palmer of Sunnyville, CA, Kathy (Todd) Cahoon of Monona, Chuck (Rena) Palmer of Rapid City, SD and Mary (Bob) Davis of McGregor; 27 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren and many extended family members. She is preceded in death by her parents; both husbands, Lee H. Palmer and Howard O. Bergeson; a son, David Palmer; 2 grandchildren, Lewis Palmer and Ava Kuss; a great-grandson, Justin Cahoon; daughter-in-law, Ruth Palmer and four siblings, Evelyn Greenawald, Truman Quandahl, Helen Hanson and Eleanor, who died in infancy.

Casketbearers are Lars, Lee, Eric, Ross, John and Aaron Palmer, Nathan and Matthew Cahoon, Carl Davis and Greg Avis.
