A Celebration of Life service for Barbara A. Leathers, 88, of Waukon, IA, who died earlier this year will be held Saturday, May 4, 2019, at 2:00 pm at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon with Rev. Corey Larson and Rev. April Larson officiating. A time to greet the family and share light refreshments will be held immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall. Barbara died January 29, 2019, and a private burial was held at Oakland Cemetery at that time.
Barbara Ann Leathers was born May 2, 1930, in Macon, Missouri, the daughter of Otho and Magdalene (Richards) Miller. She graduated from Macon High School and worked at the county extension office there. On July 18, 1952, Barb married Alfred Lowell Leathers in Macon. The couple moved to St. Louis, then San Diego and Hawaii during Al's service in the Navy, before settling in Iowa for Al's music teaching career. They lived in Seymour and Guthrie Center before moving to Waukon in 1966. Besides raising their three children, Barb also worked as a bookkeeper and Avon representative. Her hobbies included gardening and sewing. She was a member of Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon, where she was involved with various women's circles and also sang in the choir.
She is survived by her daughters: Nylene Douglas of Clarksville, TN, Allene Byroad of Dallas, TX, and Gwynne Olea and her husband Steve of Phoenix, AZ; three granddaughters: Christina Torres and her husband John of Brentwood, NY, Eryn Bishop and her husband Shaun of Dallas, TX, and Robyn Byroad of Salt Lake City, UT; and one great-granddaughter Valencia Torres. Barb was preceded in death by her parents and husband Al in 2014.
