Anna Mae (Whalen) Curtin was born on July 9, 1919 on the French Creek Township, rural Lansing, IA, farm of her parents, William Thomas and Agnes M. (Danaher) Whalen. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary's Lycurgus Catholic Church. Anna Mae attended the Lycurgus rock school and the Lansing Schools before graduating from Waukon High School, where she took the Normal Training Curriculum. She taught rural school for a time and then worked for the Harry Thies family. During WWII, she, along with several in her family, moved to Waterloo where they worked in a factory. On April 24, 1944, Anna Mae and Robert Daniel Curtin were married at St. Mary's Lycurgus Catholic Church when he was home on leave from military service. Following his discharge in 1945, they moved to Waukon and then in 1950 began farming together in the French Creek area. They continued to farm until moving back to Waukon in 1974 where Anna Mae managed the Waukon Sr. Mealsite Program for 17 years. Anna Mae was also a well known baker and through the years made hundreds of cakes for weddings and other special occasions.

Anna Mae was a faithful member of St. Patrick Catholic Church where she served as lector and communion distributor and was involved in ACCW, CEW, and study club. She was a lifetime member of VFW Auxiliary and a former 4-H leader. When her duties as a dedicated mother and volunteer allowed her time, she enjoyed dancing, playing cards, bowling, golf, and traveling. She was a member of the Upper Iowa Saddle Club and formerly served as secretary. Anna Mae and Bob regularly attended community events and she loved spending time visiting with her many friends and family.
