Amos James Pederson

Amos J. Pederson, 90, of Waterville, IA, died Sunday, March 11, 2012, at Northgate Care Center in Waukon, IA. Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 17th, at 11:00 AM at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in McGregor, IA, with Pastor David Zimmer officiating. Burial will be at East Paint Creek Synod Cemetery, rural Waterville. Friends may call from 10 AM until time of services at the church. Martin Funeral Home in in Waukon is assisting the family.


Amos James Pederson was born June 27, 1921 in Waterville, IA, the only child of Haakon and Mabel (Peterson) Pederson. He grew up in Waterville and graduated from Waterville grade school. Amos was baptized and confirmed in 1936 at the age of 16 at the American Lutheran Church in Waterville by Rev. Warburg. Early in his life he was a trucker with his own truck hauling cattle and pigs for farmers. On December 26, 1941 he married Ina Deal at a Lutheran Parsonage in Decorah, IA, with Rev. Fjelstul officiating. For a time they lived in Newton, IA, where he worked in a foundry for Maytag. Later during WWII they lived in Ypsilanti, MI, where Amos worked at the Willow Run Bomber Plant. He also worked on the Railroad out of Waterville for a number of years and worked for Allamakee County as a heavy equipment operator for 34 years, retiring in 1986.


Over the years Amos and Ina enjoyed three train trips to Seattle to visit Ina's relatives and traveling many times to Florida. They enjoyed taking their camper bullhead fishing at Waterville, MN, and visiting the children and grandchildren. He and Ina are members of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran church in McGregor.

Survivors include his wife, Ina of Waterville; three children, Terry (Sue) Pederson of Waterville, Scott (Diane) Pederson of Waukon and Melanie (Dennis) Sickels of Marshalltown, IA; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents and a son, Tony who died on November 18, 1995.

Casketbearers are Scott and Terry Pederson, Eric Schumacher, Dennis and Bradley Sickels and Juvenio Palma.

Memorials may be designated to St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran church in McGregor.
