Bunk was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in New Albin and graduated from New Albin High School. On December 29, 1952, he married Vera Thomson at St. Joseph's in New Albin and the couple raised their family in New Albin. Bunk belonged to the New Albin Community Club, the Catholic Order of Foresters, and for 40 years was in the New Albin Fire Department. He enjoyed watching sports, especially baseball, and in his younger years played with the Winnebago Valley Indians, a local New Albin team. He and Vera loved to travel, usually with a few grandkids, across the country to visit family and sightsee. The couple also liked to go to the Lady Luck riverboat in Marquette, IA. Mostly though, Bunk loved to spend time with his family and friends.
