Alta Marie Prestemon

Alta M. Prestemon, 81, of Waukon, IA, died Friday, February 5, 2010, at the Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 13th, at 11:00 AM at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon, with Pastor Samantha Houser officiating. Burial will be held in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call from 3:00 - 7:00 PM Friday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.
Alta Marie Prestemon was born May 5, 1928 in Waukon, IA, the daughter of Gilbert and Marie (Huffman) Roderick. She attended country school in the rural Allamakee County area and graduated from Waukon High School in 1945. Alta moved to Dubuque, IA, where she attended Western Union Training and went on to work for Western Union in Dubuque. On February 24, 1957 she married James Arthur Prestemon at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon. They farmed together in Jefferson Township in rural Waukon, where they raised a dairy herd, hogs and crops. Alta has been a resident of the Good Samaritan Center since 2002.
Alta was a member of Zion United Church of Christ where she was active in its ladies circles and taught Sunday school. Alta was a 4H leader and helped with meals on wheels. She was a member of the Thursday Club, a bridge club and the Waukon Golf and Country Club. Alta enjoyed working in her garden, canning, playing cards, needlework, sewing, golfing, traveling and spending time with her family and friends.
Survivors include her children, Sue (Dean) Engelhardt of Fairfax Station, VA, Dave (Gail) Prestemon of Waukon, Brian (Sonia) Prestemon of Plano, TX and Pamela (Craig) Setera of Rochester, MN; 6 grandchildren, Aaron, Emily and Nicole Prestemon, Maggie Benda, Mark Prestemon and James Engelhardt; 2 sisters, Carol (James) Moe of Waukon and Sherrie Massie of Indio, CA; 3 brothers, Marlin Roderick, Oliver (Margery) Roderick both Waukon and Roy (Sharon) Roderick of Oshkosh , WI. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James who died in 1989; a son, Mark Prestemon; a sister, Leota Prestemon and a brother, Robert Roderick.
Honorary casketbearers are Alta's grandchildren. Casketbearers are Aaron, John and Dean Prestemon, Roy, Oliver and Marlin Roderick.
