January 14, 1902 — March 4, 2008

Alice E. Hurley, 106, of New Albin, IA, died Tuesday, March 4, 2008 at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse, WI. Funeral services will be held Friday, March 7th at 11:00 am at St. Peter's Christian Community Church in New Albin, with Rev. James Olsen officiating. Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery, New Albin. Friends may call from 4:00 to 7:00 pm Thursday at the New Albin Community Center.


Alice Emma Hurley was born on January 14, 1902 in New Albin, IA, the daughter of Henry and Anna (Meyer) Buckendahl. She grew up in the New Albin area and attended the New Albin Schools. On September 22, 1921 Alice married Otto Hurley in Winona, MN. For many years they operated a telephone office out of their home in New Albin. Alice was a long time member of St. Peter's Christian Community Church in New Albin and also belonged to the Royal Neighbors of America. She enjoyed playing cards, flower gardening, and crocheting. Alice was an accomplished seamstress and often made costumes and doll clothes for her family. In recent years she had become an avid reader and she always looked forward to family times together.


Survivors include a son-in-law, Robert Thimmesch of Waukon; a granddaughter, Wendy (Tim) Stone of Waukon; and 4 great-grandchildren, Brandon, Chelsea, Lauren and Ethan Stone. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband Otto, who died in 1969; a son, Vincent; a daughter, Donna Thimmesch; brothers Albert, Alfred, Arthur, Gust, Herman, Percy and William; and sisters Emma and Matilda.


Casketbearers are Tim Stone, Brandon, Stone, Leonard Heiderscheit and Walter Breeser.
