Alfred "Al" L. Leathers, 82, of Waukon, IA, died Sunday, March 9, 2014, at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 13th, at 11:00 AM at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon, with Pastor Samantha Houser officiating. Burial with military graveside rites will be at Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call from 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM Wednesday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.
Alfred Lowell Leathers was born May 12, 1931, in Salisbury, MO, the son of Earl and Mary Ethel (Dodge) Leathers. He served in the United States Navy from 1952 - 1956 aboard the USS Nichols DDE449. On July 15, 1952, he married Barbara Ann Miller in Macon, MO. Al attended Northeast Missouri State College in Kirksville, MO, where he earned a BS in music education and a MA in music. He was a vocal music teacher for 33 years and taught in Seymour, IA, and Guthrie Center, IA, before teaching in Waukon, IA, for 25 years before retiring.
Al was a member of Zion United Church of Christ, where he directed the church choir for several years. Al sang in the Ecumenical choir, and sang for funerals and weddings. He enjoyed singing, fishing, ice fishing, woodworking, judging music contests, and he loved teaching his students. Al especially loved spending time with his family.
Survivors include his wife Barbara of Waukon; three daughters: Nylene (Ronald) Douglas of Syracuse, UT, Allene Byroad of Frisco, TX, and Gwynne (Steve) Olea of Phoenix, AZ; three grandchildren: Christina Torres, Eryn Biship, and Robyn Byroad. He is preceded in death by his parents; and his siblings: Imogene Klaus, Wilber Leathers, Gertrude Freese, Fern Titter, Mildred Fink, Hubert Leathers, and Ralph Leathers.
Casketbearers are Randy Loeb, Duane Franks, Kenneth Olson, Dale Kurth, Rick Larson, and Willard Bieber.
