Charlotte J. Mathis, 86, of Waukon, IA, died Saturday, January 19, 2013, at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon, IA. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 23rd, at 11:00 AM at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon, with Fr. Joseph Schneider and Rev. Msgr. Ed Lechtenberg officiating. Burial will be at St. Joseph's Paint Rock Cemetery, Harpers Ferry, IA. Friends may call from 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM Tuesday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, where there will be a 4:00 PM scripture service.
Charlotte Jewell (Evanson) Mathis was born February 22nd 1926 on the rural Harpers Ferry, IA, farm of her parents, Oscar and Henrietta (Rema) Evanson. She was baptized and confirmed at Old East Paint Lutheran Church in rural Waterville, IA. Charlotte attended Excelsior Grade School in rural Harpers Ferry and graduated in 1944 from Waukon High School. She was employed by Ivey’s Tea shop in Minneapolis, MN for a short time and then employed by Iowa Manufacturing in Cedar Rapids in the office. In 1950 she went to work for Donlon’s Drug Store in Decorah, IA and on January 16, 1950 she married Raymond Adolph Mathis in Decorah, IA at St. Benedicts Catholic Church. Ray and Charlotte farmed together in rural Harpers Ferry operating a dairy, hog, and grain farm. Charlotte was involved in all aspects of the farming operation, had a large garden, and raised 4 children. On March 25th, 1977 Ray passed away. At that time Charlotte and her sons, Rick and Dave, took over the large dairy farm operation until 1989 when Charlotte retired and moved to Waukon, IA. Charlotte was an active member of St. Ann’s St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Harpers Ferry, holding offices and was active in its ladies circle. She was also a member of the Corner Neighborhood Club, Harpers Ferry VFW Auxiliary, and Farm Bureau.
Charlotte enjoyed playing cards, bowling, trips to Las Vegas, Atlantic City, Reno, and any casino. She also enjoyed fishing with her daughter Gloria and great friend Carma Myers. Charlotte loved to bake and cook for family and friends. Charlotte made homes for 2 grandsons Tracy McCabe and Jeremy French.
Survivors include 2 daughters, Gloria Joan McCabe and Patricia Louise Mathis (Bob) both of Waukon; 2 sons, Richard Raymond Mathis (Kelli Grotegut) of Harpers Ferry and David Craig Mathis (Karen) of Lansing. Also surviving are 10 Grandchildren, Rob Dean Romesburg (Jessica) of Topeka, KS, Tracy James McCabe of Waukon, Cody Richard Mathis (Jill) of New Albin, IA, Abbi Lynn Mathis of Ames, IA, Brooks Craig Mathis of Harpers Ferry, Bailey Ray Mathis of Harpers Ferry, Brett Richard Yohe of Waukon, Mara Rhea Mathis of Lansing, Mackay David Mathis of Lansing, and Jeremy Roy French of Waukon, and 4 Great Grandchildren, Henley LoRee and Hendrix Dean Romesburg, Madison Mae McCabe, and Layla Marie Mathis; and many nieces and nephews.
Honorary casketbearers are Abbi, Bailey and Mara Mathis. Casketbearers are Tracy McCabe, Cody, Brooks and Mackay Mathis, Brett Yohe, Jeremy French and Rob Romesburg.
